I am stunned by Nintendo’s Repair Service.
In Part 1 I discussed my busted Wii. Part 2 I told about the great Nintendo Customer Service Rep I reached on the phone.
This morning a box arrived from FedEx. It has been 5.5 days since I sent out my broken systems (that’s 3.5 business days). I can’t believe how quickly they were returned. Awesome.
In the box was a paper that detailed what had happened. They changed the disc drive in my Wii and returned it. The DS was a “new (to me)” refurbished model. I was eager to get them up and running and find out if/what had been erased, and make sure that all worked.
The Wii’s clock and calender were messed up. They thought it was the year 2035. But all of my channels were still there, my downloads, my Miis, even my save states. Nothing had been lost. And fingers crossed, the drive won’t be so dang noisy. The noise of the system had actually become a deterrent from me playing and enjoying. When home alone, I could just crank up the stereo to compete with the noise. But this tactic was not viable for late night sessions.
The DS looked bright and shiny, (a great start). Turning it on, I had to set my language, the date, and my birthday. I was disappointed to see that the lower screen has a yellow tinge, different from the top one. I wouldn’t even care if they were both tinged, but it makes a strange effect when looking at screens displaying similar content (such as the Menu at launch, not that I have to look at that very often. Only every time I turn the system on…). That’s a bit of a bummer. When the screen is showing completely different content, it’s barely noticeable.
So I’m mostly satisfied. Let’s say 1 1/2 thumbs up, provided the Wii disc drive keeps the noise down. An added bonus, I get an extended 1 year warranty on both devices.
The bully in me, drunk on my new found power in returning products, wants to return the DS. I think he’s being melodramatic. I’m happy the hinges are securely attached.
Lesson learned, not all warranty/return’s are shams. I’ve always been one of little faith in corporate exchange policies. I couldn’t be happier Nintendo proved me wrong.

Keep it up Nintendo. Prove me wrong about what I think of your online connectivity. There was buzz recently that Nintendo would be the most likely to succeed at making a console MMO. This is crazy. Nintendo is convinced we hate community online play. That’s why we’re grateful they protect us by not including voice-chat, text chat, image sharing, or any kind of service remotely comparable to Xbox Live. Prove me wrong Nintendo. Even if it’s Animal Crossing MMO. Thirsty for some online kool-aid.
