If you hadn’t heard, Nine Inch Nails dropped a double album “Ghosts I-IV” from out of nowhere. (Thank you Bryden for the heads up.) Trent is using a digital download / online order system, similar to Radiohead’s In_Rainbows and Niggy Tardust.
First impressions… were DENIED. I tried purchasing it this morning, $5 for a FLAC (or mp3) download of all 36 tracks. To no avail. Trent has posted a couple of times to his blog that they are experiencing a greater than anticipated reaction. He also points to a link to Pirate Bay where he has uploaded the “Ghosts I”, the first nine tracks. To heck with it, says I. I’ll buy it when it slows down, in the meantime I’ll take a torrent for the full experience.
I have got to tip the hat to the smooth experience of downloading of In_Rainbows. I’d like to attribute that to Radiohead being better prepared, but it could be Trent has a farther reach on his fan base. (I seem to recall Radiohead taking pre-orders, which would have given them an idea of what the initial traffic burst would be like.)
I’m just starting to listen, and I can really dig what I hear so far. Trippy, dark and minimal. That’s my favorite flavor.

I too had to take a delay on the download from the site for my FLAC copy, so I went the torrent route too. I love this thing so far, but I have always been a huge fans of Trent’s instrumental stuff (ie A Warm Place, The Frail, etc) so I was fairly confident in this from the start. Anyone who hasn’t yet should definitely taste the Ghosts I thats available completely free.
Yeah, I picked up the FLAC today. I took a second to decide if I wanted to pay the $10 and order the discs. I decided against it. My life needs less clutter. And while I like the CDs… I opted to save my 50%.
The music is so solid. Big win for Mr. Trent.
